Virtools 4.0 Evaluation - Quickstart

To get up and running quickly with Virtools, here is where to obtain Virtools documentation:

1. First, check out the "User Guide" PDF and video tutorials in the Minisite

  • User Guide: to get a first feel of the Virtools User Interface, the Virtools user manual can be found in Start Menu / Program Files / Virtools / Virtools 4.0 / User Guide. Section 28 “Quick Start” will be helpful to introduce the Virtools 4 interface.
  • Video tutorials in the Minisite (Start Menu / Program Files / Virtools / Virtools 4.0 / Minisite). Note: download and install the Camtasia codec to play these videos.

2. Look at technical samples and other tutorials available on our Minisite:

  • Start Menu / All programs / Virtools / Virtools 4.0 / Minisite; you will find within this site some very useful technical samples, samples resources, tutorials, 3D Life player commands and Demos.
    • The A to Z tutorial for non programmers on how to build an action shooter game: C:\Program Files\Virtools\Virtools 4.0\Documentation\MiniSite\html\e09_DEMO_view_Mayhem.htm
    • A simple FPS prototype (source code included, editable inside Virtools): C:\Program Files\Virtools\Virtools 4.0\Documentation\MiniSite\html\e10_DEMO_view_WebBaseWare.htm
  • The Virtools Physics Library documentation: C:\Program Files\Virtools\Virtools 4.0\Documentation\Physics\Physics User's Guide\Start.html

3. Find all the technical samples of the Building blocks (Behaviors) in the documentation (C:\Program Files\Virtools\Virtools 4.0\Documentation\CMOS\BBSamples). The building block documentation (and BB samples) are also available by double clicking in Virtools on a building block.

4. Read the SDK documentation available in Virtools 4.0 (Start Menu / All programs / Virtools / Virtools 4.0 / SDK / Doc);

Essential for programmers to access the ready-to-compile source code (C++) of the Virtools BBs and their managers in the SDK Sample directory.

5. Log onto the Virtools support website online:

Click on "Create a New Account", fill in the form and create a "Restricted Access" account. You can access most of the FAQs and download the latest exporters for 3ds max, Maya and Lightwave3D, XSI.
